On today is my interview with American filmmakers and performance artists Josephine Decker and Zefrey Throwell, whose film “Flames” chronicles the beginning and end of their relationship; from the forthright depictions of sex to the uncomfortable public fights to the heavyhearted post-breakup therapy, Decker and Throwell offer new ways of thinking about being together, even when the romantic and sexual part of the relationship has ended

For Valentine’s Day, Slutever.com and I have you covered for films that titillate and terrify, like tales of murderous bisexuals (a classic Hollywood stereotype), or stories about people who want to have sex with cars and maybe die at the same time (not a Hollywood stereotype; J.G. Ballard was just a weird guy)

Hi sweet ones, I’m headed to New York for several days and I’m looking for film and cinema events; cinema clubs I can sneak into, screenings held in unofficial spaces, or other adjacent artistic events (music, art, performance). I’m preferential to femme and queer stuff (and also to feminist, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive spaces, but also open to everything (just not events with over 50 people type thing or oppressive spaces...although all space is oppressive anyway, lol). Thank you!

ripannanicolesmith: Updates on my upcoming talks at Yale and

Updates on my upcoming talks at Yale and NYU on Russ Meyer and feminist interpretations of his films and “dominant” female characters (and actresses) over the years and until today. My Yale presentation will be on Sunday, Feb. 18th and will have involve a survey of psychoanalytic frameworks in relation to his works and responses to his cinematic corpus. The NYU presentation is on Friday, Feb. 23rd and will make use of a (Walter) Benjaminian framework and the implications of using the digital humanities to do research on this topic. Hope to see you there and looking forward to meeting you and answering your questions! Links to both conferences here: Yale https://filmstudies.yale.edu/event/film-media-studies-graduate-student-conference-aggressive-image. NYU https://cinemastudiesconference.wordpress.com. Since this is part of my research for my doctoral thesis, I may not be publishing a paper just yet. That said, if you are a TA, instructor, or professor, I would happily Skype in to your class to speak about this topic, my research, and my process (or I can attend if it is a reasonable distance to Montreal where I live, or if my transportation can be covered via an honorarium). I am also open to attending a colloquium, symposium, or to do a talk at your university or in another venue. You can also let me know in the comments if you want me to present this on Instagram live, and we can set a mutually convenient date. I can do more than one Instagram live session and you would have the opportunity to ask me questions in a Q&A style format. 💕🎉

Hey Instagrammists, I’m presenting a paper on Russ Meyer’s films at NYU and how they came to be seen as “feminist” when they were originally seen as degrading and chauvinist (or were they?? This is the impetus for my current doctoral research). I will also talk about psychoanalysis and Walter Benjamin, among others. I will be at NYU’s Cinema Studies Conference entitled “What Now?”, held at the Tisch School of the Arts from Feb. 24-25. The schedule isn’t set yet, and I will post again when the schedule is up in case you can’t find it. Hope to see you there!

ripannanicolesmith: I went to see the premiere of Assassination

I went to see the premiere of Assassination Nation at Sundance, a cinematic allegory by director and screenwriter Sam Levinson that has managed to chronicle the lived experiences and realities of Millennial and Gen Z women (and men and gender non conforming people). It was also the biggest sale at Sundance for 10 million because the buyers fought all night for it, knowing that this film is historic. Can’t wait for you all to see the cathartic performances of Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra. 💕 Read on Slutever.com

Guys I'm weeping...this is me when I'm in another country and people are complimenting me on being "Canadian" but then I tell them about the Real History of Canada and I accidentally make them feel depressed and I don't realize it until someone points out that the person looked distressed and was trying to escape from my inadvertent activism seminar. One of my fav couples in non-hetero cinema from last year. Can we please have more women loving women where one of us doesn't perish, either emotionally or physically? Where we aren't always subjected to violence? Where we live peacefully in the film's universe? Where we are the protagonists and not a supporting token character? 😔(From Battle of the Sexes, 2017)

ripannanicolesmith: I have been thinking about this a lot

I have been thinking about this a lot lately but didn't know how to articulate it. The "this is going to kill flirting" debate is so patronizing; women are capable of critical thinking. It is so patronizing to assume that we can't make a distinction between flirting and exploitation/harassment/mistreatment/assault. It is as insulting as those who think women want to make allegations without understanding the repercussions that ensue, like violence and ostracism.

ripannanicolesmith: Book recommendation time. I have previously been so

Book recommendation time. I have previously been so averse to self-help books because they strike me as corny and phony. Turns out I was wrong and playing myself. I've been reading Reinventing Your Life by Jeffrey Young (a psychologist) and I'm shook. It talks about life traps we get into, one of which is "unrelenting standards". One of the questions it asks in this category is, "what would happen if you lowered your standards 25%?" This is for perfectionists. Don't lower your standards if they are already low, lol, but make sure you aren't taking your achievements for granted. This has helped me with debilitating writer's and creative blocks. Love, Writer Girl xoxo
